Brian King is a New Orleans-based classical guitarist whose innovative performances, arrangements, and compositions have stretched the boundaries of classical music while bringing the genre to a wider audience. He released his debut solo album Lost in Twilight in 2025.
Along with being a performer, King is an accomplished composer and arranger. His musical influences stem from a wide variety of sources, and his creative works reflect that variety: from the classical music of Tchaikovsky to the Samba-infused jazz of Chick Corea and the folk music of New Orleans. His compositional style incorporates the structure of classical composition with the musical language of jazz.
“Mr. King has ‘the five Ts’ ~ Taste, Technique, Time, Tone and Touch.
His imagination is deep and exceptionally colorful and soulful.
A ‘must-hear’ genre-straddler of the highest order.”
~ Benny Dominach, New Orleans guitarist, composer, instructor and critic
New Orleanian Phil deGruy (pronounced “degree”) took up guitar at an early age and, after being seduced by pop music, quickly gravitated towards the worlds of jazz, classical and beyond ensued.
“DeGruy is a guitarist from the Lenny Breau/Chet Atkins school of fingerpicking (he actually studied with Breau) and takes Breau’s artificial harmonics concept/vocabulary to an entirely new level. His technique is unbelievable and he’s got chops to spare, equally at home playing standards or crazed improv. He is also an evil punster.”
~ Sean Westergaard, All-Music Guide Review
”Phil’s approach to the guitar sounds like John Coltrane meets Mel Brooks at a party for Salvador Dali. It’s uncanny the way he has conjured up such an unorthodox way to attend to virtuosity.” ~ Steve Va
