Butter Woman is a life-sized puppet performance that reclaims and reimagines an African folktale once distorted by colonial retellings. The work emerges from the desire to preserve stories that center Black and Brown lineages, connect us to the Motherland and resist erasure.
Through Butter Woman, Plantain Futures seeks to restore dignity to this story and to honor the ancestral line of tellings and re-tellings that brought it. In New Orleans—a city unlike any other in the Western world because of its deep African roots and its capacity to hold layered stories—this work becomes both performance and ceremony. The puppets, worn by performers in the style of a play, transform human bodies into living vessels for myth, memory, and spirit.
