Set on the bleak, isolated English moors, the story follows two desperate spinster sisters—the stern, brooding Agatha and the naive, fame-yearning Huldey—who live in a decaying gothic manor with a philosophical, lovelorn mastiff. Their isolated existence is upended by the arrival of Emilie, a hapless young governess who was hired through correspondence by their mysteriously absent brother, only to discover there is no child to care for and no master present. As a bewildered second maid (or perhaps two conflicting personas in one) shifts the rules of the house, Emilie is pulled into a dangerous web of deception, murder, and intense yearning. Meanwhile, outside on the marsh, the lonely mastiff falls desperately and absurdly in love with a free-spirited, forgetful moor-hen. Part satire, part psychological thriller, the play explores deep questions about visibility, power, and the desperate human need to be seen and loved.
